The school’s history dates back to 1541 and Henry VIII’s education plans for ‘poor and friendless boys’. Originally next to Chester Cathedral, it has been at its present site since 1960 and it’s not a beauty. The girls and boys don’t seem to mind though. There is a spirited banter and sense of humour at King’s, and a proud recognition of its northern roots. It’s hugely popular, with a hugely jam-packed timetable. Everyone, teachers, pupils and parents, mentions the ‘busy-ness’ of the place. Days are chock-full of sports, music, drama, debate clubs and student lectures alongside classes. The school is exceptionally pleased with its sporting achievements and sent three Olympians to Beijing in 2008. Perhaps the most famous former King’s old boy is rowing gold medallist Tom James. The pupils are well known for their excellence in sciences and maths – enthusiasm in chemistry abounds (Barry Horne, former Everton FC midfielder, is the chemistry teacher and director of football, too). Language classes are also booming. We’ve heard that Spanish teacher Mr Sabio teaches verbs to Year 9 to the accompaniment of a flamenco guitar (dressed in the full gear as well). This atmosphere of industrious informality could be the secret to King’s enduring success.
